Junior Commercial/ Litigation Attorney – Cape Town

 Dingley Marshall Inc is looking for a Junior Attorney with 1-2 years post admission experience in litigation and commercial law, to assist with legal commercial matters.  The candidate is likely to spend most of their time on secondment as In-House Legal Counsel to a high-end luxury hospitality group and longstanding client of the firm either immediately upon employment or alternatively after 6 or 12 months of employment in the firm’s office

An interesting, transactional role where the successful candidate will be given real responsibility for assisting and advising the client on complex legal issues concerning its corporate governance, contract management, employment and / or any other legal issues that may arise. The role will also include managing the client’s litigation matters in conjunction with Dingley Marshall Inc.  Not only does this role enable the candidate to work closely with senior members of the client company, but it also provides the opportunity to work with and be mentored by the Senior Attorneys at Dingley Marshall Inc.

The successful candidate is required to:

  • be an admitted Attorney with experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts;
  • have experience with a strong commercial law bias from either private practice or in-house;
  • have a firm grasp of the overall litigation process and be confident managing High Court, Magistrate’s Court, CCMA and Arbitration matters;
  • have a proven track record of handling competing, urgent matters, managing client expectations and meeting deadlines;
  • be able to independently undertake complex, client facing meetings or conference calls;
  • demonstrate natural ease communicating with people at various levels of seniority including an ability to present to senior management, if requested, in a clear and confident manner;
  • be confident to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • be proactive and happy to take responsibility for their own work;
  • be able to thrive in a busy, full ranging and hands on environment;
  • have the judgement to be able to recognise when it is appropriate to push back on legal points which involve unacceptable business risks and when to refer back to the client on commercial issues;
  • be highly organised, yet flexible, adaptable and a good team player with excellent people skills;
  • have excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • have an analytical ability and strong attention to detail;
  • have good general commercial awareness and be able to quickly grasp an understanding of how individual businesses operate so as to understand a client’s business and provide them with relevant and real advice;
  • be solution driven;
  • be confident when confronting something they haven’t done before;
  • be able to identify when they need assistance either in terms of capacity or understanding a particular matter;
  • have their own transport and driver’s license;
  • be able to travel within South Africa; and
  • have a good command of written English.

Full time litigation and commercial secretary required

This position will require the employee to assist in the litigation department primarily but also to assist where necessary in the commercial department as well as assisting with answering phones, filing, scanning, meeting and travel organisation.

  • Have litigation secretarial experience and relevant references as well as a Secretarial Diploma/Legal secretarial diploma/paralegal qualification
  • Have passed matric comfortably and have your certificate available
  • Have dictaphone and copy typing experience
  • Have preparation, opening and maintenance of client files capability
  • Be able to handle diary management and track messages
  • Have an ability to prepare accounts/invoices for clients and prompt time capturing
  • Be able to assist with Debtors
  • Have FICA Admin focus and accuracy
  • Be comfortable with liaising with clients, sheriffs, estate agents and attorneys
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team with good interpersonal skills
  • Show initiative while working
  • Have strong administrative and organisation skills
  • Be focused and demonstrate attention to detail
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have good telephone etiquette and answer calls efficiently and helpfully
  • Have full working knowledge of all MS packages
  • Have some Microsoft Excel experience
  • Knowledge of Ghost Practice is an advantage

Our office is in the Claremont CBD and salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.
